Appraisal Skills for Appraisers (F2F)

The Appraisal Skills for Appraisers course provides learners with a clear understanding of the purpose and importance of staff appraisals and their role within effective performance management. Participants will explore what an appraisal is, how it supports both employees and organisations, and how regular performance reviews can encourage development, improve motivation, and enhance overall performance.

The course examines the appraisal process from beginning to end, helping learners understand the importance of effective planning and preparation before, during, and after an appraisal meeting. Participants will explore how a structured approach can create meaningful discussions, identify achievements and areas for development, and establish clear expectations for future performance.

Learners will develop an understanding of how to gather relevant facts and information to support fair, balanced, and evidence-based appraisal discussions. The training highlights the importance of using accurate information and examples when reviewing an individual’s performance and agreeing development needs.

The course also explores how to create S.M.A.R.T. objectives that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Participants will consider how well-designed objectives can provide direction, encourage accountability, and motivate both individuals and teams to achieve positive outcomes.

In addition, learners will develop essential communication skills for conducting effective appraisal meetings. This includes structuring questions appropriately, using active listening techniques, recognising basic body language, and creating an environment where employees feel able to contribute openly to discussions.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on developing confident, constructive, and consistent appraisal practices that support employee development, strengthen performance, and contribute to positive working relationships.
