This course helps learners understand the condition, recognise signs and triggers, and develop awareness of appropriate management and support for individuals living with asthma.

Learning Outcomes

The Asthma Awareness course provides learners with a clear understanding of asthma and how the condition can affect an individual’s breathing, health, and everyday life. Participants will explore what asthma is and develop awareness of how the airways can be affected during an asthma episode.

The course examines common asthma triggers and symptoms, helping learners recognise factors that may contribute to breathing difficulties. Participants will develop greater awareness of signs such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, while recognising that symptoms can vary between individuals.

Learners will explore how asthma symptoms can be treated and managed, including the importance of following an individual’s asthma management plan and prescribed treatment. The training also covers how to respond appropriately if an asthma attack occurs, including recognising when urgent or emergency assistance may be required.

The course provides an overview of inhalers and spacers, helping participants understand their purpose and how they may be used as part of an individual’s asthma treatment. Emphasis is placed on supporting individuals to follow professional guidance and their agreed care or treatment plan.

Participants will also explore the importance of accurately recording asthma attacks and relevant observations. Effective records can help identify patterns, communicate concerns, and support the ongoing monitoring and management of the condition.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on increasing awareness, recognising changes promptly, and providing safe, appropriate, and person-centred support to individuals living with asthma.
