Awareness of Autism (Online)
This course introduces autism, helping learners understand key characteristics, communication and sensory differences, and how to provide effective, person-centred support.
Learning Outcomes
The Awareness of Autism course provides learners with a clear understanding of autism and the different ways it can affect individuals. Participants will explore the autism spectrum and key areas where autistic people may experience differences or difficulties, recognising that every individual has their own strengths, needs, and experiences.
The course examines key definitions associated with autism, including the traditional concept of the Triad of Impairments, while helping learners develop a broader understanding of social interaction, communication, and patterns of behaviour. Participants will also explore common myths and misconceptions about autism, promoting greater awareness and reducing stigma.
Learners will gain insight into how autistic people may experience and process the world differently, including sensory sensitivities relating to sound, light, touch, taste, and other environmental factors. The session explores how sensory experiences can influence behaviour, communication, comfort, and emotional wellbeing.
The training also examines different communication and behavioural needs, helping learners understand how to adapt their approach to provide effective support. Participants will explore practical ways to minimise anxiety, create predictable and supportive environments, and respond appropriately to individual needs.
Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on understanding the individual, respecting differences, promoting independence, and providing compassionate, person-centred support.
By the end of this course, participants will understand autism and the spectrum, recognise sensory and communication differences, challenge common myths, understand behaviours, and apply appropriate strategies to minimise anxiety and provide person-centred support.
