This course introduces dissociative disorders, helping learners understand their causes and symptoms, and how they can affect an individual’s memory, identity, and perception.

Learning Outcomes

The Awareness of Dissociative Disorders course provides learners with a clear understanding of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and how it can affect an individual’s identity, memory, behaviour, and everyday functioning. Participants will explore what DID is and develop greater awareness of the experiences associated with the condition.

The course examines how DID may be identified, diagnosed, and managed, helping learners understand the importance of appropriate professional assessment and ongoing support. Participants will also develop awareness of the possibility of dissociative difficulties when working with vulnerable individuals, while recognising the importance of avoiding assumptions or making diagnoses themselves.

Learners will explore some of the behaviours and experiences that may present in individuals with DID, including changes in memory, identity, awareness, communication, and emotional responses. The session highlights how these experiences can vary considerably between individuals and may sometimes be misunderstood.

The training also provides participants with potentially helpful approaches for responding to individuals experiencing dissociation. Emphasis is placed on remaining calm, communicating sensitively, promoting feelings of safety, and using person-centred approaches that respect the individual’s needs and experiences.

Throughout the course, learners will develop greater awareness and confidence in recognising potential dissociative experiences and responding in a supportive, respectful, and informed manner.
