Learning Outcomes

The Awareness of Hoarding course provides learners with an understanding of hoarding behaviours and the impact they can have on individuals, families, and the wider community. Participants will explore the characteristics commonly associated with hoarding, gaining insight into why individuals may find it difficult to discard possessions and how these behaviours can affect health, safety, and quality of life.

The course examines hoarding disorder as a recognised mental health condition, while also considering other physical and mental health challenges that may contribute to or coexist with hoarding behaviours. Learners will develop an understanding of the complex and individual nature of hoarding, promoting compassionate and non-judgemental approaches to support.

Participants will explore how to conduct sensitive interviews and assessments, learning techniques that encourage engagement while respecting the individual’s dignity and choices. The session introduces the Clutter Image Rating Scale as a practical tool for assessing the level of clutter and supporting consistent, objective decision-making.

The training also considers the practical challenges associated with hoarding, including safely reducing clutter, managing belongings, arranging short-term storage where appropriate, and working collaboratively with individuals to achieve realistic and sustainable outcomes. Learners will gain awareness of support services, including specialist organisations, self-help groups, and community resources that can assist individuals affected by hoarding.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on safeguarding both the individual and the practitioner. Participants will explore how to recognise and manage risks, maintain professional boundaries, and work safely while supporting people living with hoarding behaviours in a respectful, person-centred, and effective way.
