This course provides an introduction to mental health, helping learners understand common mental health conditions, recognise signs of distress, and promote wellbeing in everyday settings.

Learning Outcomes

The Awareness of Mental Health course provides learners with a broad and informative overview of mental health and how it affects individuals across society. Participants will explore key facts and figures relating to mental health, helping them understand how common mental health problems are and the significant impact they have on individuals, families, and communities.

The course examines who is most likely to develop mental health difficulties, highlighting that mental distress can affect people of all ages, backgrounds, and circumstances. Learners will explore a range of possible causes, including biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors, gaining a clearer understanding of how mental health is influenced by life experiences, stress, trauma, and physical health.

A key focus of the session is understanding how people can be supported in their recovery. Participants will learn about practical ways to promote wellbeing, encourage resilience, and support individuals experiencing mental distress. The course also explores the meaning of severe mental health conditions, helping learners understand the difference between common and more complex mental health needs.

Learners will be introduced to the concepts of psychosis and neurosis, allowing them to understand the differences between these types of mental health experiences and how they may affect thoughts, emotions, and behaviour. By the end of the course, participants will have a stronger foundation of knowledge and greater confidence in recognising, understanding, and supporting mental health needs.
