This course introduces Parkinson’s disease, helping learners understand its symptoms, progression, and how to provide person-centred support.

Learning Outcomes

The Awareness of Parkinson’s Disease course provides learners with an understanding of the clinical background of Parkinson’s disease and how it affects the brain and nervous system. Participants will explore how the condition develops and how it impacts movement, coordination, and other aspects of physical and cognitive functioning.

The course helps learners recognise both the motor and non-motor symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease. Participants will explore common motor symptoms such as tremor, stiffness, slowed movement, freezing episodes, and an increased risk of falls, alongside non-motor symptoms including fatigue, sleep disturbances, mood changes, and Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). The training highlights how these symptoms can vary between individuals and change over time.

Learners will gain an understanding of the different stages of Parkinson’s disease and how the condition may progress, helping them recognise changing support needs throughout an individual’s journey. The session also explores the impact Parkinson’s disease can have on everyday activities, including mobility, communication, personal care, and maintaining independence.

Participants will be introduced to the range of treatment and management options available, including medication and other supportive interventions that help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on recognising symptoms early, understanding the individual impact of the condition, and providing compassionate, person-centred support that promotes dignity and wellbeing.
