Awareness of Sepsis (Virtual)

This course introduces sepsis, helping learners understand what sepsis is, recognise early warning signs, and respond quickly to support timely medical intervention and improve outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

The Awareness of Sepsis course provides learners with an understanding of sepsis as a serious medical condition that can develop from infection and requires rapid recognition and response. Participants will explore the basic pathology of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and sepsis, gaining insight into how the body reacts to severe infection and how this response can lead to life-threatening complications.

The course helps learners recognise the clinical presentation of sepsis and septic shock, highlighting how symptoms can develop and progress if not treated quickly. Participants will examine the differences between septicaemia, sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock, developing a clearer understanding of how these conditions are related but differ in severity and clinical impact.

Learners will explore the inflammatory processes involved in sepsis and how these responses affect the body’s organs and systems. The session also provides an overview of the history of infection control in relation to sepsis, emphasising the importance of prevention, early recognition, and effective clinical response.

The training highlights the common signs and symptoms of sepsis and introduces the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) track and trigger tool, helping learners understand how early warning systems can support the identification of deteriorating patients. Participants will also explore groups that may be at greater risk of developing sepsis, including vulnerable individuals and those with underlying health conditions.

In addition, the course emphasises the importance of accurate recording and reporting when sepsis is suspected, ensuring concerns are communicated quickly and appropriately. By improving awareness and recognition, the training aims to support early intervention and improve outcomes for individuals affected by sepsis.

What You’ll Learn

By the end of this course, participants will understand the pathology of SIRS and sepsis, recognise the signs and symptoms of sepsis and septic shock, understand risk groups and the differences between related conditions, and apply appropriate recording and reporting procedures to support early recognition and response.

  • Know the basic pathology of SIRS and Sepsis
  • Recognise the clinical syndrome of Sepsis and Septic Shock
  • Understand the differences between Septicaemia, Sepsis, Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock
  • Understand Signs and symptoms of Sepsis
  • Examine the National Early Warning Score track and trigger tool
  • Explore who are the risk groups
