Awareness of Sepsis (Online)
This course introduces safeguarding at first contact, helping learners recognise concerns, respond to disclosures, and follow appropriate safeguarding procedures.
Learning Outcomes
The Awareness of Sepsis course provides learners with a clear understanding of sepsis, including the basic pathology of Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) and how the body responds to serious infection. Participants will explore the clinical features of sepsis and septic shock, developing greater awareness of how these conditions can progress and become life-threatening.
The course examines the differences between septicaemia, sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock, as well as the different stages of sepsis. Learners will explore the inflammatory processes involved and develop the ability to recognise key signs and symptoms that may indicate an individual is becoming seriously unwell.
Participants will also gain an understanding of the history and importance of infection prevention and control in relation to sepsis. The session highlights individuals who may be at greater risk, helping learners recognise when increased observation and early intervention may be required.
The training introduces the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) track and trigger tool and how it can support the recognition of deterioration. Learners will also explore the importance of accurate recording and timely reporting, ensuring concerns are communicated and escalated appropriately.
Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on early recognition, effective communication, and prompt action to support safer practice and improve outcomes for individuals at risk of sepsis.
By the end of this course, participants will understand the causes and stages of sepsis, recognise key signs and symptoms, identify individuals at greater risk, understand the use of NEWS, and apply appropriate recording, reporting, and escalation procedures.
