Awareness of Substance Misuse (Online)
This course introduces substance misuse, helping learners understand its causes, recognise the signs and support individuals with awareness, empathy, and appropriate interventions.
Learning Outcomes
The Awareness of Substance Misuse course provides learners with an understanding of substance misuse and the impact it can have on individuals, families, and communities. Participants will explore what substance misuse is and gain awareness of the substances that are most commonly misused, including drugs, alcohol, and prescription medications. The course also examines the reasons why individuals may misuse substances, such as coping with stress, mental health difficulties, social pressures, or personal circumstances.
Learners will develop the ability to recognise possible signs and indicators of substance misuse, including physical, behavioural, and emotional changes that may suggest an individual is experiencing difficulties. Understanding these signs can help learners respond appropriately and identify when additional support may be needed.
The training highlights the social and personal effects of substance misuse, including its impact on physical and mental health, relationships, employment, and overall wellbeing. Participants will also explore the difference between substance misuse and dependency, gaining an understanding of how patterns of use can develop and the importance of recognising when additional support or intervention may be required.
The course also introduces the principles of harm reduction and risk assessment, helping learners understand practical approaches that minimise harm and promote safer outcomes for individuals affected by substance misuse. Emphasis is placed on recognising risk, responding appropriately, and supporting individuals in a non-judgemental and person-centred way.
By the end of this course, participants will understand what substance misuse is, recognise commonly misused substances and the signs of misuse, understand its social and personal impacts, and distinguish between misuse and dependency.
