Bi-Polar Disorder
This course introduces bipolar disorder, helping learners understand its symptoms, causes, and impact on mood and behaviour, while promoting awareness and supportive, person-centred responses.
Learning Outcomes
The Bipolar Disorder Awareness course provides learners with a clear understanding of bipolar disorder and how it affects an individual’s mood, behaviour, and overall wellbeing. Participants will explore what bipolar disorder is, gaining insight into the nature of the condition and how it involves significant shifts between periods of depression and mania.
The course examines the possible causes and effects of bipolar disorder, including psychological, physical, and mental health factors that may contribute to the condition. Learners will develop an understanding of the symptoms, characteristics, and diagnostic process, recognising how bipolar disorder may present differently for each individual.
Participants will explore the experiences of both depressive and manic episodes, helping to build awareness of how changes in mood, energy levels, thinking, and behaviour can impact daily life, relationships, and functioning. The session also considers long-term management of bipolar disorder, focusing on the importance of ongoing support, stability, and self-management strategies.
The training addresses attitudes and stigma surrounding bipolar disorder, encouraging reflection and promoting compassionate, non-judgemental approaches. Learners will also examine potential associated risks, including links with anxiety, substance misuse, self-harm, and suicide, highlighting the importance of early recognition and appropriate support.
In addition, participants will gain an overview of treatment options, including medication, psychological therapies, and lifestyle approaches that support recovery and wellbeing. The course aims to increase understanding, confidence, and awareness when supporting individuals living with bipolar disorder in a respectful and person-centred way.
By the end of this course, participants will understand what bipolar disorder is, recognise its symptoms and causes, understand depression and mania, be aware of treatment options and associated risks, and respond with greater awareness and sensitivity when supporting individuals living with the condition.
