This course introduces acquired and traumatic brain injury, helping learners understand their effects and recognise how to provide appropriate, person-centred support.

Learning Outcomes

The Brain Injury Awareness course provides learners with a clear understanding of acquired and traumatic brain injuries and how they can affect individuals in different ways. Participants will explore what acquired brain injury (ABI) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) mean, including the key terminology associated with these conditions.

The course examines how brain injuries can impact an individual’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural functioning. Learners will explore how effects may vary depending on the nature and severity of the injury, recognising that each individual’s experience and support needs can be different.

Participants will develop awareness of how brain injury may affect areas such as memory, communication, concentration, mobility, behaviour, and emotional wellbeing. The session highlights the importance of understanding these changes and adapting support to meet the individual’s needs.

The training also explores interventions that can provide effective support, including rehabilitation, communication strategies, environmental adjustments, and person-centred approaches. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on promoting independence, dignity, recovery, and quality of life for individuals affected by brain injury.
