This course helps learners understand its possible causes, recognise triggers, and develop positive, person-centred strategies to prevent and manage situations effectively.

Learning Outcomes

The Challenging Behaviour course provides learners with a clear understanding of behaviours that may challenge and the different factors that can contribute to them. Participants will explore how to identify challenging behaviour and recognise that behaviour may be a form of communication linked to an individual’s needs, emotions, environment, or circumstances.

The course examines possible causes and triggers of challenging behaviour, helping learners understand why behaviours may occur and how different situations can influence an individual’s response. Participants will explore how making appropriate adjustments to the environment, communication, routines, or support provided may help reduce the frequency or intensity of challenging behaviours.

Learners will also consider how their own actions, communication style, body language, and responses can influence behaviour. The training encourages participants to reflect on their practice and develop calm, consistent, and person-centred approaches when responding to challenging situations.

The course explores a range of behavioural strategies that can be used to support individuals effectively. Learners will develop an understanding of proactive reduction strategies, focusing on identifying triggers, meeting individual needs, and taking early action to prevent situations from escalating.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on promoting dignity, safety, positive communication, and person-centred support while helping learners develop the confidence and practical skills required to respond effectively to behaviours that challenge.
