Learning Outcomes

The Designated Safeguarding Lead course provides learners with a comprehensive understanding of the responsibilities and expectations associated with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) role. Participants will explore how the DSL supports safeguarding practice within their setting, ensuring concerns are recognised, managed appropriately, and responded to in line with statutory guidance and organisational responsibilities.

The course clarifies the roles and responsibilities of a Designated Safeguarding Lead, helping participants understand their leadership role in promoting safe practice and protecting individuals from harm. Learners will examine the difference between safeguarding concerns and quality or service complaints, ensuring appropriate procedures are followed and risks are managed effectively.

Participants will explore how to establish and maintain a strong safeguarding culture within their organisation, embedding safeguarding into everyday practice and ensuring staff understand their responsibilities. The training also explains how organisational policies and procedures align with legislative requirements and statutory safeguarding frameworks.

The session highlights the importance of responding to all safeguarding concerns, including low-level concerns, and understanding how to respond proportionately to differing levels of need using local threshold guidance. Learners will gain insight into what makes a good safeguarding referral, including the importance of accurate recording, clear communication, and timely action.

Participants will also develop an understanding of their role within safeguarding assessments and any interventions that follow, including multi-agency working and ongoing support planning. The course explores how to respond professionally when there is disagreement with safeguarding decisions or actions taken by other agencies, ensuring appropriate escalation procedures are followed.

Finally, learners will examine information sharing responsibilities, including when it is appropriate to share information, who it should be shared with, and how to balance confidentiality with safeguarding duties. The course aims to build confidence in leading safeguarding practice and ensuring effective protection for those at risk.
