This course introduces reflective practice, helping learners understand how reflecting on experiences can improve professional development, decision-making, and the quality of care and support they provide.

Learning Outcomes

The Develop as a Reflective Practitioner course supports learners in understanding the importance of reflective practice within social care and how it contributes to professional development and improved outcomes for those receiving support. Participants will explore the role of reflective practice in social care, recognising how taking time to reflect on experiences can help improve decision-making, learning, and the quality of care provided.

The course introduces a range of reflective practice models, helping learners understand structured approaches that can be used to reflect on experiences in a meaningful and constructive way. Participants will examine the differences between reflection, analysis, and simple description, developing the ability to think critically about their actions, decisions, and the outcomes of their practice.

Learners will explore Gibbs’ Cycle of Reflection as a practical framework that supports deeper understanding of experiences, encouraging individuals to consider what happened, how they felt, what was learned, and how practice can improve in the future. The training highlights how reflective thinking supports continuous learning and professional growth.

The session also examines the wider benefits of reflective practice, including improving communication, building confidence, strengthening problem-solving skills, and supporting safer, more effective care. Participants will consider some of the common barriers that can prevent reflective practice, such as time pressures or lack of confidence, and explore practical ways to overcome these challenges.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on understanding why reflective practice is a key part of contemporary social work and social care. By developing reflective skills, learners can continually improve their practice, support professional standards, and deliver more thoughtful, person-centred care.
