This course provides an introduction to Down’s syndrome, helping learners understand the condition, its characteristics, and how to support individuals in a person-centred and inclusive way that promotes independence and wellbeing.

Learning Outcomes

The Down’s Syndrome Awareness course provides learners with a clear understanding of Down’s syndrome, supporting greater awareness of the condition and how it may affect individuals in different ways. Participants will explore the meaning of Down’s syndrome and associated terminology, helping to build respectful and informed communication while promoting inclusion and understanding.

The course examines the possible causes of Down’s syndrome, including the genetic factors involved, and explains how the condition occurs. Learners will develop an understanding of the common characteristics associated with Down’s syndrome, including physical traits, learning differences, communication needs, and potential health considerations, while recognising that every individual’s abilities and experiences are unique.

Participants will also explore how to provide effective and person-centred support, focusing on promoting independence, choice, and participation in everyday life. The session highlights practical approaches to communication, inclusion, and supporting wellbeing, ensuring individuals are supported in ways that respect their strengths, preferences, and aspirations.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on positive practice, understanding individual needs, and creating supportive environments that enable people with Down’s syndrome to live fulfilling and meaningful lives.
