This course provides an introduction to eating disorders, helping learners understand their causes, signs, and impact, and how to respond with awareness and sensitivity.

Learning Outcomes

The Eating Disorders Awareness course provides learners with a deeper understanding of eating disorders, including how they develop, the different forms they can take, and the impact they have on an individual’s physical and emotional wellbeing. Participants will explore common types of eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder, gaining insight into the complex relationship between food, mental health, and self-image.

The course examines potential causes and contributing factors, including psychological, social, and environmental influences, helping learners recognise that eating disorders are complex mental health conditions rather than lifestyle choices. Participants will learn to identify common signs and symptoms, including behavioural, emotional, and physical indicators that may suggest someone is struggling.

Learners will also explore how eating disorders can affect daily life, relationships, and long-term health, as well as the importance of early recognition and supportive responses. The session highlights appropriate communication strategies, focusing on empathy, sensitivity, and reducing stigma when discussing difficult or personal topics.

By the end of the course, participants will have greater awareness of eating disorders and the confidence to recognise concerns, respond appropriately, and contribute to supportive environments that encourage recovery and wellbeing.
