Learning Outcomes
The Ethics and Values in Social Care course provides learners with a clear understanding of the ethical principles, professional values, and legislation that underpin effective social care practice. Participants will explore how ethical considerations influence professional decision-making and how these principles can be applied consistently when supporting individuals.
The course encourages learners to recognise how their own personal beliefs, attitudes, and values may influence professional practice. Participants will develop greater self-awareness and explore ways to ensure personal views do not negatively affect the quality, fairness, or consistency of the support they provide.
Learners will examine situations where values may conflict or where difficult ethical dilemmas arise. The training explores how to consider different perspectives, balance competing responsibilities, and reach informed and principled decisions that respect the rights and wellbeing of individuals.
The course also highlights the importance of respectful partnership working with service users and carers. Participants will explore how to listen to and respect individual needs, preferences, experiences, and views while encouraging meaningful participation in decisions about care and support.
Learners will develop an understanding of individuals’ rights to autonomy and self-determination, including the importance of promoting choice, independence, dignity, and control wherever possible. The session considers how professionals can balance these rights with their responsibilities for safeguarding and duty of care.
The training also explores privacy and confidentiality, helping participants understand how to protect personal information within and outside an individual’s family and support networks. Learners will consider professional accountability and the circumstances in which appropriate information sharing may be necessary.
Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on ethical, respectful, and person-centred practice that protects individual rights, promotes participation, and supports high-quality professional decision-making.
By the end of this course, participants will understand and apply ethical principles in social care, manage personal and conflicting values, make informed ethical decisions, promote individual rights and autonomy, work respectfully with service users and carers, and maintain appropriate privacy and confidentiality.
