This course introduces suicidal emotions, helping learners understand the factors that contribute to suicidal thoughts, recognise signs, and respond with appropriate support.

Learning Outcomes

The Exploring Suicidal Emotions course provides learners with a greater understanding of suicidal thoughts and emotions, helping them develop the confidence to respond sensitively and appropriately to individuals experiencing emotional distress. Participants will explore their own perceptions and reactions to suicide and self-harm, encouraging reflection and the development of compassionate, non-judgemental approaches.

The course examines the experiences and circumstances that can contribute to self-harm and suicidal thoughts, including emotional, psychological, and social factors. Learners will gain a deeper understanding of the complex feelings and situations that may increase an individual’s vulnerability, while recognising that every person’s experience is unique.

Participants will explore common myths and misconceptions surrounding suicide and self-harm, replacing these with evidence-based facts that promote greater awareness and reduce stigma. The session also introduces practical interventions, including distraction and avoidance techniques, that may help support individuals experiencing suicidal emotions alongside appropriate professional support.

The training highlights the importance of effective planning, monitoring, and reviewing of incidents, ensuring that concerns are managed safely and consistently. Learners will also consider the emotional impact that self-harm and suicidal behaviours can have on both individuals and staff, recognising the importance of appropriate support and professional resilience.

Throughout the course, participants will develop effective listening and communication skills, learning how to approach sensitive conversations with empathy, confidence, and respect. Emphasis is placed on responding appropriately to difficult subjects, recognising warning signs, and supporting individuals in a way that promotes safety, dignity, and access to further help where required.
