This course introduces disciplinary and grievance procedures, helping learners manage workplace issues, in line with organisational policies and employment legislation.

Learning Outcomes

The Handling Discipline and Grievance course provides learners with the knowledge and confidence to manage workplace disciplinary and grievance matters fairly, consistently, and in line with organisational policies and employment legislation. Participants will explore the purpose of disciplinary and grievance procedures and how they contribute to maintaining positive working relationships, promoting accountability, and ensuring a fair working environment.

The course examines how workplace concerns can often be resolved informally through effective communication and early intervention. Learners will develop an understanding of when informal approaches are appropriate and how to recognise situations where formal disciplinary or grievance action is necessary.

Participants will explore the importance of setting clear expectations, rules, and standards of behaviour, as well as communicating these effectively to employees. The training also highlights the importance of accurate, objective, and confidential record keeping, ensuring all actions, discussions, and decisions are documented appropriately throughout the process.

The session provides practical guidance on planning and conducting disciplinary and grievance meetings, helping learners understand how to manage these discussions professionally, fairly, and consistently. Participants will also examine when an internal investigation is required, what a thorough investigation should include, and how to gather and assess evidence to support informed decision-making.

The course explores when it is appropriate to take formal action and how to apply penalties and sanctions fairly, proportionately, and in accordance with organisational procedures. Finally, learners will gain an understanding of the appeals process, including how to manage appeals objectively and ensure employees have the opportunity for decisions to be reviewed fairly.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on applying fair, transparent, and legally compliant processes that support both organisational standards and positive employee relations.
