This course helps learners understand the importance of good oral health, recognise common mouth care concerns, and provide effective, person-centred support for the service user.

Learning Outcomes

The Improving Mouth Care of Service Users course provides learners with a clear understanding of the importance of good oral health and the impact poor mouth care can have on an individual’s health, comfort, nutrition, and overall wellbeing. Participants will explore common causes of poor oral health and the importance of providing consistent, person-centred mouth care.

The course helps learners understand how to check an individual’s mouth appropriately, recognise potential concerns, and follow an individual Mouth Care Plan. Participants will explore what a Mouth Care Plan may include and how it can be used to ensure care is tailored to the person’s individual needs.

Learners will examine current techniques and products used to provide effective mouth care, helping them develop confidence in supporting good oral hygiene. The training also introduces the use of dedicated oral health assessment tools to identify individual needs, risks, and areas where additional support may be required.

The session highlights how to recognise oral health problems that require further attention, including when concerns should be escalated and when a referral to a dentist or other healthcare professional may be necessary.

The course also emphasises the importance of maintaining clear, accurate, and up-to-date records of mouth care, assessments, concerns, and actions taken. Throughout the training, learners will develop practical knowledge to promote good oral health while maintaining the dignity, comfort, and wellbeing of service users.
