This course introduces Huntington’s disease, helping learners understand the condition, recognise common symptoms and behavioural changes, and provide appropriate support.

Learning Outcomes

The Introduction to Huntington’s Disease course provides learners with a clear understanding of the clinical definition of Huntington’s disease (HD) and how the condition can affect individuals over time. Participants will explore the progressive nature of the condition and develop awareness of its impact on physical, cognitive, and emotional wellbeing.

The course helps learners identify the common signs, symptoms, and characteristics of Huntington’s disease, including changes in movement, thinking, mood, and behaviour. Participants will also explore the causes and risk factors associated with HD, including its genetic nature and how it may affect individuals and families.

Learners will gain an overview of the treatments and management approaches available to help control symptoms and maintain quality of life. The session also examines behavioural changes that may occur and how these can influence relationships, daily activities, and support needs.

The training explores the nutritional needs of individuals living with Huntington’s disease, including how changes in movement and swallowing may affect eating and maintaining adequate nutrition. Participants will also develop an understanding of communication needs and how speech and language difficulties may change as the condition progresses.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on providing compassionate, person-centred support that adapts to the individual’s changing needs while promoting dignity, independence, and quality of life.
