This course helps learners understand their responsibilities, manage concerns effectively, and ensure investigations are conducted thoroughly, in line with safeguarding procedures.

Learning Outcomes

The Leading Safeguarding Investigations course provides learners with a clear understanding of best practice when conducting and leading adult safeguarding enquiries and investigations. Participants will explore the importance of carrying out investigations in a fair, structured, person-centred, and professional manner while following relevant safeguarding procedures and organisational requirements.

The course examines the key processes and specific procedures involved in safeguarding investigations, helping learners understand the stages of an investigation from the initial concern through to its conclusion. Participants will explore the competencies required of an effective investigator, including their roles, responsibilities, professional boundaries, and the importance of maintaining objectivity throughout the process.

Learners will examine different sources and types of evidence that may be relevant to a safeguarding investigation. The training explores how to plan an investigation effectively, identify appropriate evidence, establish key lines of enquiry, and ensure information is gathered and recorded systematically.

The course also develops awareness of effective interviewing techniques when speaking with individuals involved in safeguarding enquiries. Participants will consider how to plan and conduct interviews appropriately and how to evaluate the information obtained to support fair and evidence-based decision-making.

Learners will explore the importance of maintaining a clear evidential audit trail, including accurate documentation of information, decisions, actions, and evidence gathered throughout the investigation. This supports accountability and ensures that the investigation process can be clearly demonstrated and reviewed.

The training also examines the elements that need to be considered when a safeguarding investigation may progress to formal proceedings. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on professional judgement, accurate evidence gathering, effective communication, confidentiality, and conducting safeguarding investigations that are thorough, proportionate, and focused on protecting individuals from harm.
