Mental Capacity Act Awareness (F2F)
This course introduces key principles of the Mental Capacity Act, helping to understand how to support individuals with decision-making while promoting their rights and choices.
Learning Outcomes
The Mental Capacity Act Awareness course provides learners with a clear understanding of the background, purpose, and key policies relating to the Mental Capacity Act. Participants will explore why the Act was introduced, who it applies to, and how it protects and supports individuals who may experience difficulties making particular decisions for themselves.
The course examines the key principles of the Mental Capacity Act and how they should be applied in everyday health and social care practice. Learners will explore the importance of starting from the assumption that an adult has capacity, providing appropriate support to help people make their own decisions, and respecting an individual’s right to make decisions that others may consider unwise.
Participants will develop an understanding of how capacity is assessed and why assessments must relate to a specific decision at a specific time. The training will explore the factors that should be considered when determining whether an individual can understand, retain, use or weigh relevant information and communicate their decision.
The course also examines Best Interests decision-making and the responsibilities of those involved when an individual is assessed as lacking capacity for a particular decision. Learners will consider the importance of involving the individual as much as possible, taking account of their wishes, feelings, beliefs, and values, and consulting appropriate people when making decisions.
Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on protecting individual rights, promoting choice and independence, and ensuring decisions are made lawfully, respectfully, and in a person-centred way.
By the end of this course, participants will have developed a greater understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and feel more confident in applying its principles to support lawful, respectful, and person-centred decision-making.
