Mental Health Awareness (Online)
This course introduces mental health and wellbeing, helping learners recognise common mental health conditions, understand their impact, and how to support them.
Learning Outcomes
The Mental Health Awareness course provides learners with a greater understanding of severe mental health conditions and how they can affect an individual’s thoughts, emotions, behaviour, and everyday life. Participants will explore what is meant by severe mental health conditions and develop awareness of the different ways individuals may experience significant psychological distress.
The course examines severe distress and introduces the concepts of psychosis and neurosis, helping learners understand the differences between them and how symptoms may present. Participants will develop greater awareness of unusual mental states and the impact these experiences can have on communication, relationships, and daily functioning.
Learners will explore the basic principles of supporting someone experiencing severe distress or an unusual mental state. The session focuses on appropriate communication, maintaining a calm and supportive approach, recognising individual needs, and knowing when additional professional support may be required.
The training also explores practical strategies for engaging with individuals experiencing mania or depression, helping learners adapt their communication and support approaches according to the person’s presentation and needs. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on promoting dignity, reducing stigma, and providing compassionate, person-centred support.
By the end of this course, participants will understand severe mental health conditions, recognise different forms of psychological distress, understand the differences between psychosis and neurosis, and apply appropriate strategies when supporting individuals experiencing mania, depression, or unusual mental states.
