This course introduces the importance of good oral health, helping learners understand how to support individuals with daily mouth care and recognise signs of oral health problems.

Learning Outcomes

The Mouth Care of Service Users course provides learners with an understanding of the importance of maintaining good oral health and the role it plays in overall health and wellbeing. Participants will explore the common causes of poor oral health, including inadequate hygiene, diet, medication, and health conditions, and how these factors can affect an individual’s comfort, nutrition, and quality of life.

The course helps learners understand how to check an individual’s mouth safely and appropriately, and how to follow a personalised mouth care plan. Participants will explore what a mouth care plan may include and how it supports consistent, person-centred care tailored to individual needs.

Learners will examine up-to-date information on techniques and products used for effective mouth care, gaining awareness of appropriate tools and approaches that support good oral hygiene. The training also introduces how to carry out an oral health needs assessment using a dedicated assessment tool, helping learners identify potential concerns and determine the level of support required.

The session highlights the importance of recognising when oral health problems need to be escalated and how to refer individuals to appropriate dental services when necessary. Participants will also understand the importance of maintaining accurate and clear records, ensuring that mouth care is documented properly to support continuity of care and professional accountability.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on promoting dignity, comfort, and wellbeing while supporting individuals to maintain good oral health as part of their everyday care.
