This course helps learners identify potential hazards, assess risks, and apply safe practices to protect both individuals and care workers during moving and handling activities.
Learning Outcomes
The Moving & Handling Risk Assessment course provides learners with a clear understanding of how to identify, assess, and manage risks associated with moving and handling activities. Participants will explore common hazards and high-risk handling practices that may result in injury to both the individual being supported and the care worker.
The course examines relevant legislation, organisational policies, and individual responsibilities relating to safe manual handling. Learners will develop an understanding of the causes and potential effects of moving and handling injuries and explore the basic principles of safer handling practice.
Participants will examine the purpose and importance of moving and handling risk assessments, including how assessments can be used to identify hazards, evaluate risks, and determine appropriate control measures. The training encourages learners to consider the individual’s needs, abilities, environment, and level of assistance required when planning a moving and handling activity.
The course also explores how and when different types of moving and handling equipment may be used. Learners will consider appropriate equipment selection as well as circumstances or contraindications where particular equipment or techniques may not be suitable.
Participants will develop skills in identifying moving and handling problems and creating appropriate handling plans designed to avoid or minimise the risk of injury. The session highlights the importance of regularly reviewing plans when an individual’s needs, abilities, or circumstances change.
Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on ergonomic solutions, appropriate equipment, effective risk assessment, and safe handling approaches that protect the dignity and independence of the individual while reducing the risk of injury to everyone involved.
By the end of this course, participants will understand how to identify and assess moving and handling risks, apply relevant legislation and safe handling principles, use equipment appropriately, and develop effective handling plans to minimise the risk of injury.
