This course introduces the importance of nutrition and hydration in maintaining health and wellbeing, helping learners understand basic dietary needs, recognise risks of poor nutrition or dehydration, and support individuals to maintain healthy intake.

Learning Outcomes

The Awareness of Nutrition & Hydration course provides learners with a comprehensive introduction to the importance of maintaining good nutrition and adequate hydration to support overall health and wellbeing. Participants will explore the principles of healthy eating, alongside the impact that poor nutrition can have on physical health, energy levels, recovery, and long-term wellbeing. The course highlights how nutritional needs can vary across individuals and the importance of recognising when additional support may be required.

Learners will examine common mealtime challenges that individuals may experience, such as reduced appetite, swallowing difficulties, behavioural factors, or environmental barriers. The session explores practical problem-solving approaches to support positive mealtime experiences, promote independence, and encourage adequate food and fluid intake.

The course introduces healthy eating recommendations and explores how dietary requirements may differ depending on age, medical conditions, cultural preferences, or specific health needs. Participants will gain an understanding of how tailored nutrition supports individuals living with a range of conditions and contributes to person-centred care.

Participants will also learn about the role and function of essential vitamins and nutrients, alongside the potential health problems that can arise from deficiencies. The training highlights the importance of recognising early warning signs and responding appropriately to prevent deterioration.

A key focus of the session is recognising the signs and symptoms of dehydration and understanding the risks associated with inadequate fluid intake. Learners will be introduced to the MUST (Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool), gaining awareness of how it is used to identify individuals at risk of malnutrition and support appropriate monitoring and intervention.

The course also explores best practice approaches and relevant CQC guidelines, supporting learners to understand professional expectations and how high standards of nutrition and hydration contribute to safe, effective, and high-quality care. Participants will leave with increased confidence in supporting individuals to maintain healthy nutrition and hydration as part of everyday practice.
