This course introduces the importance of good nutrition and hydration, helping learners understand how a balanced diet and adequate fluid intake support health, quality of life.
Learning Outcomes
The Nutrition & Hydration course provides learners with a clear understanding of the importance of good nutrition and adequate hydration in maintaining health, wellbeing, and quality of life. Participants will explore the principles of healthy eating and develop awareness of the potential causes and consequences of poor nutrition.
The course examines common mealtime difficulties that individuals may experience and explores practical approaches to identifying and resolving these problems. Learners will consider how factors such as appetite, physical ability, health conditions, personal preferences, and the mealtime environment can influence an individual’s food and fluid intake.
Participants will explore healthy eating recommendations and develop awareness of different dietary requirements that may be necessary due to individual needs, preferences, allergies, intolerances, or health conditions. The training also considers the role of vitamins within the body and the potential health problems associated with nutritional deficiencies.
The course helps learners recognise common signs and symptoms of dehydration and understand the importance of encouraging and monitoring appropriate fluid intake. Participants will explore factors that may increase an individual’s risk of dehydration and the importance of responding promptly to concerns.
Learners will be introduced to the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) and its role in identifying adults who may be at risk of malnutrition. The session will also explore the importance of appropriate monitoring, recording, and escalation where nutritional concerns are identified.
Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on best practice, relevant CQC expectations, and person-centred approaches to nutrition and hydration. Learners will develop greater awareness of how appropriate support can promote dignity, choice, independence, and positive health outcomes.
By the end of this course, participants will have developed a greater understanding of nutrition and hydration and feel more confident in recognising individual needs, identifying potential concerns, and supporting healthy, person-centred practices.
