Personality Disorder (Online)
This course helps learners understand how they can affect thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and relationships, while promoting informed, respectful, and person-centred support.
Learning Outcomes
The Personality Disorder Awareness course provides learners with a clear understanding of personality disorders and their practical, medical, and social meanings. Participants will explore how personality disorders can affect an individual’s thoughts, emotions, behaviours, relationships, and everyday functioning.
The course helps learners recognise common signs and symptoms associated with personality disorders and explores the different types of personality disorder. Participants will be introduced to the traditional ‘cluster system’ used to group different personality disorder presentations, helping them develop a broader understanding of how characteristics can vary between individuals.
Learners will examine possible causes and contributing factors associated with personality disorders, including psychological, social, environmental, and biological influences. The training emphasises that experiences and support needs can differ significantly from one person to another.
The course also focuses on Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), including treatment and management options that may support individuals living with the condition. Participants will explore potential risks and complications associated with BPD and the importance of appropriate professional assessment, support, and risk management.
Learners will consider how personality disorders may affect individuals and groups within social care and inpatient settings, including their impact on communication, relationships, behaviour, and engagement with services. The session will explore the importance of maintaining appropriate professional boundaries while responding to individuals with consistency, respect, and empathy.
By the end of this course, participants will have developed a greater understanding of personality disorders and feel more confident in recognising their impact and providing appropriate, respectful, and person-centred support.
