This course helps learners understand behaviour, identify its possible causes, and use person-centred strategies to promote positive outcomes and improve quality of life.

Learning Outcomes

The Understanding Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) course provides learners with a clear understanding of how to support individuals using a positive, person-centred approach to behaviour. Participants will explore the principles and philosophy of PBS and how these can be used to improve quality of life while reducing behaviours that may challenge.

The course examines how to develop and implement effective Behaviour Support Plans based on an individual’s needs, strengths, preferences, and circumstances. Learners will explore functional, contextual, and skills-based assessments to better understand the purpose or function of behaviour and identify appropriate support strategies.

Participants will consider the reasons behind behaviour, including factors that may be present before and during episodes of escalation. The training helps learners recognise potential triggers and early signs of changes in behaviour, enabling them to respond proactively and reduce the likelihood of situations escalating.

The course also encourages learners to reflect on their own responses to situations involving conflict, aggression, or violence. Participants will develop greater confidence in recognising behaviours that challenge and responding in a calm, appropriate, and supportive manner.

Learners will explore the PBS framework for planning interventions, with emphasis placed on proactive approaches, developing skills, adapting environments, and meeting individual needs rather than simply reacting to behaviour.

Throughout the course, particular attention is given to the importance of consistency. Participants will understand how a coordinated approach between staff, families, and other professionals can provide stability, reduce anxiety, and ensure individuals receive effective and respectful support.
