The course helps participants understand how to balance safety with independence, supporting individuals to take informed risks that promote confidence, choice and personal growth.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will have a clear understanding of the importance of adopting a positive, person centred approach to risk assessment and management. Learners will explore how empowering individuals to make their own choices, even when risk is involved, supports independence, dignity, and personal development.
The course will provide an overview of the legal frameworks and principles that protect the rights of individuals with disabilities to make decisions and take reasonable risks. Participants will gain insight into how to balance safety with autonomy, ensuring that risk assessments focus on enabling rather than restricting opportunities.
Through discussion and practical examples, learners will understand how to work collaboratively with individuals, families, and professionals to identify, assess, and manage risks effectively. They will develop the confidence to support informed decision-making while maintaining a partnership approach that values communication, trust, and shared responsibility.
Most importantly, participants will leave with the knowledge and skills to apply positive risk-taking principles in practice, helping individuals live fulfilling lives while ensuring appropriate safeguards are in place.
