This course helps learners understand their responsibilities when handling, administering, recording, and storing medicines in line with legislation and organisational procedure.
Learning Outcomes
The Safe Handling and Administration of Medication course provides learners with a clear understanding of the principles and responsibilities involved in the safe management and administration of medicines. Participants will explore relevant legislation, organisational policies, and professional responsibilities that support safe medication practices within health and social care settings.
The course examines the ‘6 Rs’ of medication administration and how these principles can be applied to reduce the risk of medication errors. Learners will also explore the four classifications of medicines, different drug forms, and the various routes through which medication may be administered.
Participants will develop an understanding of potential side effects and adverse reactions to medication, including the importance of recognising concerns and taking appropriate action. The training highlights the importance of accurate and timely record keeping to ensure medication administration is clearly documented and communicated.
The course explores responsibilities relating to the safe supply, receipt, storage, and disposal of medicines, including the safe management of medical oxygen. Learners will consider how appropriate procedures help maintain medication security, quality, and safety.
Participants will also examine how to respond appropriately when an individual refuses medication, when medication is discarded, or when an administration error occurs. The session emphasises the importance of following organisational procedures, reporting concerns, and taking appropriate action to protect the individual.
The training also explores the role of the pharmacist and the importance of effective communication between care staff, healthcare professionals, and individuals receiving medication. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on safe administration, accurate recording, professional accountability, and person-centred medication support.
