Self-Neglect (Virtual)
This course introduces self-neglect, helping learners understand the signs, causes, and risks associated with self-neglect, and how to respond appropriately to support and safeguard individuals.
Learning Outcomes
The Self-Neglect Awareness course helps learners develop an understanding of self-neglect and how it can affect an individual’s health, wellbeing, and safety. Participants will explore how to recognise signs of self-neglect, including changes in personal care, living conditions, health needs, and overall wellbeing, enabling them to identify when individuals may require additional support or intervention.
The course examines how to work effectively and sensitively with individuals who may be experiencing self-neglect. Learners will explore the complexities involved, including the importance of balancing respect for personal choice with the responsibility to promote safety and wellbeing. The session also discusses the limits and responsibilities of intervention, helping participants understand how to respond proportionately while maintaining a person-centred approach.
Participants will gain an understanding of how the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) applies in situations involving self-neglect, including how capacity assessments and best interest decisions may support appropriate action when individuals are unable to make certain decisions for themselves.
The training also explores when adult safeguarding procedures may be required and how safeguarding frameworks can support individuals who are at risk due to self-neglect. Learners will examine how to recognise when concerns meet safeguarding thresholds and how to respond in line with organisational and legal responsibilities.
Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on best practice approaches, encouraging learners to develop practical strategies that promote engagement, support positive outcomes, and ensure individuals are treated with dignity and respect while addressing potential risks associated with self-neglect.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to recognise signs of self-neglect, understand their responsibilities and limits of intervention, apply the Mental Capacity Act in relevant situations, identify when safeguarding responses are required, and apply best practice strategies when supporting individuals who self-neglect.
