This course introduces the principles of risk assessment, helping learners identify risks, promote safety and wellbeing, and balance risk management with person centred care.

Learning Outcomes

The Service Users Risk Assessment course provides learners with a clear understanding of risk assessment and its importance in maintaining the safety, wellbeing, and independence of individuals receiving care and support. Participants will explore relevant legislation and understand how legal and organisational requirements influence effective risk management within social care settings.

The course examines the key principles of risk assessment, helping learners understand how to identify hazards, consider who may be affected, and evaluate the level of risk involved. Participants will explore the five steps to risk assessment and how these can be applied consistently within their everyday practice.

Learners will develop an understanding of how to prioritise risks according to their likelihood and potential impact. The training explores how appropriate control measures can be introduced to reduce or manage identified risks while avoiding unnecessary restrictions on an individual’s independence, choice, and quality of life.

The course also examines the documentation used when completing risk assessments, highlighting the importance of clear, accurate, and up-to-date records. Participants will consider how effective documentation supports communication, accountability, continuity of care, and safe decision-making.

Learners will explore how control measures should be monitored and reviewed to ensure they remain effective and appropriate as an individual’s needs or circumstances change. The session also considers how risk assessment works in practice, enabling participants to apply their knowledge to realistic care situations.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on proportionate and person-centred risk management that promotes safety while respecting individual rights, choices, dignity, and independence.
