Stroke Awareness (Virtual)
This course introduces stroke, helping learners understand its causes, recognise the signs and symptoms, and respond quickly to support timely medical intervention and improve outcomes
Learning Outcomes
The Stroke Awareness course provides learners with an understanding of what a stroke is and how it affects the brain and body. Participants will explore the different types of stroke, including ischaemic and haemorrhagic strokes, and how these can impact individuals in different ways.
The course focuses on developing the ability to recognise the signs and symptoms of a stroke, helping learners understand the importance of rapid response and early intervention. Participants will gain awareness of emergency treatment procedures and the urgency of seeking medical assistance to improve outcomes.
Learners will also explore the fundamentals of stroke, including common risk factors such as lifestyle, health conditions, and age. The session provides an overview of treatments and medications used following a stroke, supporting recovery and ongoing management.
The training highlights some of the challenges individuals may experience after a stroke, including difficulties with swallowing (dysphagia), communication issues such as speech and language difficulties, and changes in cognitive function. Participants will also consider the psychological impact of stroke, including emotional changes and the effect on confidence and independence.
Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on understanding the full impact of stroke and supporting individuals in a person-centred way, promoting recovery, dignity, and quality of life.
By the end of this course, participants will understand what a stroke is, recognise different types and signs of stroke, know how to respond in an emergency, be aware of treatments and risk factors, and understand the physical, communication, and psychological impacts of stroke.
