This course provides a basic understanding of stroke, its causes, early warning signs, and the importance of timely response and support to improve outcomes for those affected.

Learning Outcomes

The Stroke Awareness course gives learners a thorough understanding of what a stroke is, how it occurs, and why immediate recognition and response are so important. Participants will explore the different types of strokes, gaining insight into how each affects the brain and how symptoms may vary as a result. The session supports learners in identifying early warning signs and recognising stroke in real-world situations, helping them feel more confident in acting quickly when it matters most.

The course introduces emergency treatment pathways, highlighting the importance of rapid medical intervention to improve long-term outcomes. Learners will also gain awareness of the medications and therapeutic treatments commonly used in stroke care, helping them understand how recovery is supported after the initial event.

A key focus of the session is understanding stroke fundamentals and associated risk factors, including lifestyle influences, underlying health conditions, and genetic predispositions. Participants will also explore the effects of stroke beyond the physical, including difficulties with swallowing, speech, and communication, which often become key areas of support.

The course also examines the psychological impact of stroke, recognising how sudden changes in mobility, independence, or cognition can affect emotional wellbeing and relationships. By the end of the session, learners will have a broad understanding of stroke, its immediate and longer-term effects, and how timely recognition and compassionate support can significantly influence recovery.
