This course helps learners understand Asperger’s and how to provide effective, person-centred support by recognising communication differences, sensory needs, and strategies that promote independence and wellbeing.

Learning Outcomes

The Supporting the Person with Asperger’s course provides learners with an understanding of Asperger’s and how it fits within the autistic spectrum. Participants will explore autistic spectrum disorders and develop awareness of how individuals may experience differences in communication, social interaction, and processing information.

The course examines what Asperger’s means and how it may affect the way individuals understand and interact with the world around them. Learners will gain insight into how people with Asperger’s may process information, interpret social situations, and experience sensory input, helping to build empathy and understanding of their perspectives.

Participants will also explore how anxiety and uncertainty can affect individuals with Asperger’s and how environments, communication styles, and expectations can influence emotional wellbeing. The session discusses practical ways to minimise fear and anxiety by promoting predictability, clear communication, and supportive routines.

The training introduces practical and specific strategies that can be used to effectively support individuals with Asperger’s in everyday situations. Learners will explore approaches that encourage independence, build confidence, and create supportive environments that respect individual needs, strengths, and preferences. Emphasis is placed on promoting understanding, patience, and person-centred support to help individuals feel safe, valued, and included.
