Understand Self-Harm (Online)
This course helps learners understand the reasons behind self-harming behaviours, recognise warning signs, and respond with empathy, sensitivity, and appropriate support.
Learning Outcomes
The Self-Harm course provides learners with a comprehensive understanding of self-harm, exploring what it is and the complex reasons why individuals may engage in self-harming behaviours. Participants will examine the different functions of self-harm, recognising that it is often a coping mechanism used to manage overwhelming emotions, psychological distress, trauma, or other underlying difficulties.
The course helps learners recognise the signs and indicators of self-harm, including physical, emotional, and behavioural changes that may suggest an individual is experiencing distress. Participants will explore why experiences of self-harm are unique to each individual, promoting a person-centred and non-judgemental approach to understanding and support.
Learners will also gain awareness of alternative coping strategies that can help individuals manage difficult emotions in safer ways. The session introduces the concept of harm minimisation, exploring what it means in practice and how it can support individuals while they work towards healthier coping mechanisms and recovery.
The training examines the relationship between self-harm and suicide, helping participants understand that while self-harm does not always indicate suicidal intent, there can be important links that require careful assessment and appropriate support. The course also challenges common myths and misconceptions surrounding self-harm, encouraging learners to reflect on attitudes and develop compassionate, informed responses.
Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on recognising distress, responding appropriately, and supporting individuals with empathy, respect, and understanding while promoting their safety and wellbeing.
By the end of this course, participants will understand what self-harm is, recognise its signs and underlying causes, be aware of harm minimisation and alternative coping strategies, understand the links between self-harm and suicide, and respond with greater awareness, confidence and sensitivity.
