Understanding Challenging Behaviour

This course introduces challenging behaviour, helping learners understand its causes, recognise triggers, and develop supportive approaches that promote positive behaviour and safe, person-centred care.

Learning Outcomes

The Understanding Challenging Behaviour course provides learners with the knowledge and skills needed to recognise, understand, and respond effectively to behaviours that may challenge within health and social care settings. Participants will begin by identifying what is meant by challenging behaviour and exploring how behaviour can be a form of communication linked to unmet needs, environmental factors, or emotional distress.

The course examines the possible causes of challenging behaviour, helping learners understand how factors such as communication difficulties, health conditions, trauma, sensory needs, or changes in routine may influence behaviour. Participants will explore how recognising triggers and underlying causes supports more compassionate and effective responses.

Learners will consider how adjustments to the environment, communication approaches, and support strategies can help reduce behaviours of concern. The session encourages reflection on how staff actions, responses, and attitudes can impact behaviour, highlighting the importance of consistency, empathy, and person-centred practice.

The training introduces practical behavioural strategies designed to support positive outcomes, including proactive approaches that focus on prevention rather than reaction. Participants will develop an understanding of proactive behaviour reduction strategies, learning how to anticipate challenges, support emotional regulation, and promote positive engagement.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on promoting safety, dignity, and wellbeing while supporting individuals in ways that reduce distress and encourage positive behavioural outcomes.
