Understanding Depression (Online)
This course introduces depression, helping learners understand the condition, recognise its impact on individuals, and develop awareness of appropriate support and interventions.
Learning Outcomes
The Understanding Depression course provides learners with a clear understanding of depression and how it can affect an individual’s emotional, physical, and mental wellbeing. Participants will explore what depression is and how it differs from temporary feelings of sadness or low mood.
The course examines the common signs and symptoms of depression, including changes in mood, motivation, sleep, appetite, concentration, energy levels, and interest in everyday activities. Learners will develop awareness of how depression can affect people differently and how symptoms can vary in severity and duration.
Participants will explore some of the possible causes and contributing factors associated with depression, including difficult life experiences, stress, health conditions, social circumstances, and other psychological or biological factors.
The training also considers the impact depression can have on relationships, employment, daily activities, independence, and overall quality of life. Learners will explore the importance of recognising changes in an individual’s wellbeing and responding in a supportive, sensitive, and non-judgemental manner.
The course provides an overview of approaches that may support individuals experiencing depression, including professional support, psychological therapies, medication, lifestyle changes, and positive coping strategies. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on increasing awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting compassionate, person-centred support for individuals affected by depression.
