This course introduces depression, helping learners understand its symptoms, causes, and impact on an individual’s mental health and daily life, while promoting awareness and supportive responses

Learning Outcomes

The Understanding Depression course provides learners with a clear introduction to depression and how it can affect an individual’s mental health, wellbeing, and daily life. Participants will explore what depression is, gaining an understanding of how it differs from normal feelings of sadness and how it can impact mood, thinking, behaviour, and physical health.

The course examines how depression can affect people in different ways, recognising that individuals may experience a wide range of emotional, physical, and behavioural symptoms. Learners will develop awareness of how depression may influence motivation, relationships, sleep, appetite, and the ability to carry out everyday activities. The training highlights that each person’s experience of depression is unique and may vary in severity and duration.

Participants will also explore interventions that can provide effective support for individuals experiencing depression. This includes an overview of approaches such as psychological therapies, medication, lifestyle changes, and supportive communication. The course emphasises the importance of early recognition, empathy, and creating supportive environments that encourage individuals to seek help and access appropriate support.

Throughout the training, learners will develop a greater understanding of depression and how compassionate, informed responses can support individuals in managing their mental health and wellbeing.
